Artist at heart

Nanyang Academy of Fine Art (NAFA), St Thomas Walk campus, 1978

I have always been an artist. I have a liberal and free artistic expression (寫意派), and my medium is Chinese ink or brush painting (水墨畫). I have also dabbled in pottery, using the potter’s wheel and also free form sculpting. I graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art (NAFA) at its old campus at Saint Thomas Walk in 1979 – I was the youngest student in the class.

I was so busy with work and business that I stopped painting for more than 36 years.

However, I have managed to start painting again, using simple disposable pre-inked Japanese calligraphy brushes and sketchbooks instead of the traditional Chinese brushes, ground ink and cotton paper.

These days I also dabble in Chinese calligraphy, in the style of 行書.

Music creation perhaps?

I learned violin as a kid, just for awhile. I learned the electronic wind instrument (EWI), the digital equivalent of the saxophone when I was in my thirties. And now, I am trying my hand at the traditional Chinese instrument Guqin (古琴). Wish me luck.

I am also writing lyrics and tinkering with music creation. Visit my YouTube channel @artistaviator:
