We chat about the Edelkrone Pocket Rig, the Varavon Loupe EX, and the Sennheiser MKE 400 portable shotgun microphone.
Edelkrone Pocket Rig
There are lots of camera and video camera rigs around, to help stabilize video shooting without resorting to a static tripod, which lends itself to conventional shooting and some would consider this method “boring”. The rig would give mobility to the cameraman, but the conventional rig can be rather bulky and would not be portable either. The Edelkrone® Pocket Rig is the most compact rig I have seen, and folds down to just slightly larger than than the footprint of the typical large DSLR. I am using the Olympus OM-D and so given its tiny size, the Edelkrone Pocket Rig would protrude somewhat, but still beats hands-down in dimensions and portability, any other rig I have seen. This is a gadget you have to view their video to understand its appeal. Visit site.
Varavon Loupe Ex – Uni
The modern DSLR is fast becoming the ubiquitous tool for both stills and video, especially for social media applications. When shooting outdoors, an additional help may be needed for viewing the LCD screen, especially if using shallow DOF with fast prime lenses. The Varavon Loupe Ex is an optical viewfinder that offers a flip-up 3X magnifying loupe with manual diopter correction, hinged on a shielded hood. The whole unit is attached with a large red aluminium dial to the camera, and retains the capability of still mounting on a tripod. An excellent addition to shooting video with a DSLR, especially if using a portable rig. Visit site.
Sennheiser MKE400 Shotgun Microphone
There are many shotgun and other microphone options for video cameras these days. The Sennheiser MKE400 is perhaps one of the smallest shotgun microphones that a hobbyist videographer can bring along and expect decent audio recording without much fuss. The MKE400 has a all-metal housing that lends confidence to lugging and using it in the outdoors, and does not stick out too much to be distracting to your subjects, nor get in the way. It has switchable controls for near and farther distances, wind noise filter, and great operating time from just a tiny AAA battery. The MKE400 works from a 3.5mm stereo jack, and comes complete with a standard foam windshield. You can adapt third-party “dead cat” windshield for this microphone as well. Visit site.
